Introduction

'The Brevity™ Amphibious Aircraft

The emphatically negative design of most amphibious aircraft is basically the result of insufficient thrust lines and poor aerodynamic characteristics. This applies for boat-hulled type aircraft and floatplanes. Many of these heavy and over-powered constructions do poorly meet many of today’s (environmental) standards. Market analysis and achievability studies reveal however that there are substantial niche-, replacements and growth markets for new seaplanes, providing that they come as an innovative and fully certified concept. The design of the brevity de facto incorporates many of such improvements.

In the late 1990’s a Dutch aviation enthusiast conceived such a new and innovative design. It tackles the mayor design flaws of older types of seaplanes and integrated many improvements. The Brevity concept is a boat-hulled type of aircraft characterized by a ground-breaking design that actually incorporates the propulsive unit in its center of gravity! Several feasibility studies of both design and concept made clear that this aircraft is worthwhile and merited further development, testing and certification.

The concept of the Brevity™ is an evolution of an existing JAR 23 certified aircraft design. A large number of components and parts of the brevity are there for already designed and qualified This advantage will greatly diminish risks for future investments. The main risks are thus limited to only parts of the design and certification, such as the amphibious fuselage.

To accentuate the importance of the project the Dutch Ministry of Economical affairs showed significant interest in the project and provided funding through several subsidies. Next to these fundings the project also received financial support from various risk capitalists and GRA-CV Concept Development, the company behind the Brevity™ project.

The Brevity™ concept is now ready for launching the detailed development phase. Interest from several aviation companies persuade us to explore the Brevity’s potential market. As a result of these positive findings, it was decided to bring the development of the aircraft in a separate legal entity, The Brevity Seaplane LLC. This way, the project can progress independently and leave better options for investors to participate.

Project and design status

Project status

-   Approximately all investments needed to complete this first phase have been made. These investments were all used to complete the studies for the the Brevity, such as Preliminary design studies and market surveys, but also to establish The Brevity Seaplane LLC.

The completion of these preliminairy design issues made it possible to:

-   complete various studies in relation to the design of the propulsive unit, the hull and the aerodynamic design in general. And hence,

-   the completion of the preliminary design as such and the aircraft concept in relation to its markets and potential users.

    Preliminary design status Brevity (3

-     EASA/FAR-23* to be certified aircraft with STOL** and limited aerobatics capabilities.

-     Side-by-side four-seat boat-hulled amphibious aircraft.

-     Fully composite airframe structure with metal engine frame.

-     Mid-wing configuration with laminar flow profile and slotted flaps.

-     Retractable tricycle landing gear with nose wheel.

-     VFR/IFR approval will be part of the design process.

-     Jet fuel engines are being researched. (Allison / Turbomeca)

Strategy, Risks and Profits

The comprehensive design of The Brevity™ has become feasible due to computer aided design, in combination with the newest production methods for reinforced epoxy materials. This has resulted in a design with considerable aerodynamic advantages and strongly improved flight characteristics.

These features defacto incorporate various business opportunities. Because effective design resources can be hard to find, and with external advisors being expensive, suitable investors are not easily identified for an aviation project like this. However, combining expertise, experience, and entrepreneurship, we are confident to be able to generate this required support.

The Brevity Seaplane LLC wishes to fill a void by entering a promising aviation market. When combined with experience, commitment, and expertise we jointly can build a successful aviation enterprise.(4

Financial projections in brief

Short-term goals

Only limited investments have to be made to complete the set-up and launch of the Brevity™ company. This will be established by march 2009. From this point forward the new company will focus on the marketing of its product and encourage new investors.

(Estimated duration 6 to 9 months).

Medium term investments

To finish the preliminary design and make preparations for the further development of the project a total investment of about € 5.530,000,= is needed. This will allow The Brevity Seaplane LLC to complete the detailed design including certification, and allow the company to make all necessary preparations for the production phase.

During the development phase a "Proof of concept” will be built, tested and presented at various international air shows. This development will be preferably done in collaboration with an American Company, based in southern California.

In an early stage of the development an application will be made for EASA /FAR-23 certification, to have early involvement of the authorities. Industrialisation aspects will be taken into account from the start to assure producability of the design. This includes preparing a decision on how and where to produce the aircraft.

(Estimated duration: 2 to 5 years).

Long-term envisions

Production is envisioned to be done by providing an exclusive license to an external manufacturer. For industrial risk reduction this option is most preferable. The most convincing way to persuade (potential) customers to buy the aircraft is with the back up of a well-known manufacturer producing the aircraft and thus with the support of institutional or corporate investors.

(Estimated duration 3 to 9 years).

Participation in 'The Brevity Aircraft'

It was a clear risk for all parties who invested in the concept and the completion of the preliminary design and market potential studies.

Now with the Brevity™ concept proven feasible, it is anticipated that commercial funding for a “proof of concept” will be obtained during 2009.  We like to express special thanks for the initial sponsors who have contributed to an innovative, viable and clean aircraft design.

It is foreseen that new investors will gain a share in the company that will hold all rights to The Brevity™ concept and its future commercialisation, and receive a fair return on their investment.

The European Aviation Safety Agency is the centrepiece of the European Union’s strategy for aviation safety. Our mission is to promote the highest common standards of safety and environmental protection in civil aviation.

The Transport and Water Management Inspectorate (IVW) ensures that aircraft comply with airworthiness and environmental protection standards. Aircraft, engines, propellers, equipment, parts, etc. must be properly designed, manufactured and maintained, in order to be permitted to operate in the airspace. Compliance is mainly achieved through certification of products and organisations. Only approved organisations have privileges to undertake aviation activities. Certification is increasingly performed within an international context, in which the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) plays a major role.

Our Mission: our continuing mission is to provide the safest, most efficient aerospace system in the world. Our Vision: we continue to improve the safety and efficiency of flight. We are responsive to our customers and are accountable to the taxpayer and the flying public. Our Values: Safety is our passion. We are the world leaders in aerospace safety.
