SIMONA MOTION SIMULATOR

SIMONA® Flight Simulator at Delft University

SIMONA®

is part of the Delft University of Technologies and stands for; Simulation Motion and Navigation, is a resaerch simulator for various purposes. Such purposes for example can be aircraft, cars or vessels. It consist of the shuttle itself and a internal frame work on wich the verious mask' can be mounted.

Mould purpose

The first configuration of SIMONA however, is for aviation purposes. For this a mask was needed of a full-size airliner, comparable to that of a Fokker 100.

Mould concept

The product needed to consist out of two Skirt shells. For matching considerations it was favorable to manufacture the whole product in a single mould.

The orientation of the mould is upside down in relation to that of the skirt. This is done in order to have gravity as a helping factor in forming the sandwich laminate into the mould. It was then also much easier to apply the laminate into the mould for the workers in this fashion.

The negative mould features a number of vertical and horizontal wooden frames that describe the Skirt geometry. These frames are covered with a flexible mat that closely follows the frame geometry. An FRP glass layer covers this mat and provides a high quality mould surface.

The vertical wooden frames are orientated perpendicular to the side and frontal window planes. This is done to create a good attachment medium and orientation reference for the windowpanes mould, which are part of the whole mould assembly.

In all, the vertical, horizontal and special rigging frames form a self-alinging relative stiff structure.
